au where jean is a werewolf that lives primarily in the forest with a pack of other wolves. one day as he's wandering around by himself, he gets cornered by a group of hunters and is recognized as a werewolf, and dragged back to the village where the humans came from. the hunters want to make money off of jean by making people pay to see him, as humans haven't seen a werewolf for an entire generation. jean unfortunately is treated badly by the hunters and is kept (pt 1)
in a too-small cage and in chains. as he’s constantly changing back and forth between human and wolf in an attempt to escape, many people get the chance to witness it. then word of the captive werewolf reaches the ears of a doctor named marco, who studied animals as well as people in his work. concerned that the wolf was not being treated properly, he goes to see it and is appalled at what he finds. a clearly mistreated wolf growls at him from the cage.
marco demands that the wolf be released, but is driven away. he begins visiting jean at night, slowly gaining his trust by feeding him proper food and healing wounds left by the hunters. but marco learns that jean will be sold for a large amount of money. he then tries to get jean to escape back into the forest, but jean won’t leave without him. marco then hides jean in his own house, keeping him hidden in the basement when his house is searched.
by this time, marco has earned jean’s full trust and stays with him in secret. marco spends his time teaching jean to speak and how to act human. often in the evenings, marco would read to him. one night as he is doing so, jean lays his head in marco’s lap and falls asleep to his voice. they eventually escape the village to another. by this time marco realizes that he doesn’t want to let go of jean, and jean doesn’t want to leave, either. after jean accidentally kisses him after coming across a romance novel, their love blossoms from there and marco discovers werewolves are really loud in bed. the end.
